Ozone kills microscopic organic forms of life
Ozone is formed when three atoms of oxygen are bound together, instead of the normal two. If you have ever detected a faint, sweet smell in the air after a lightning storm, that was ozone!
Ozone is a powerful oxidizer of contaminants in water. Ozone generators used for spas or hot tubs are called ozonators.
Ozone aids water disinfection and reduces the amount of chemicals needed
There are two types of ozonator for use in hot tubs. Ultra Violet (UV) and Corona Discharge (CD). CD ozonators are preferred because they produce a consistent amount of ozone over a period of time and are reliable, whilst UV ozonators lose effectiveness over time as the bulb gets weaker and have more components likely to fail.
It is important to realise that ozonators only kill contaminants in the ozone chamber and provide no residual protection to the main body of hot tub water. They are only effective when water is circulating; no ozone units totally eliminate the need for chemical oxidizing agents known as residual sanitisers, such as chlorine or bromine, in the spa and swimspa water. But they greatly assist water disinfection and reduce the amount of sanitising chemical dosing needed.
To be effective, you should run your ozonators several hours per day. If your spa filter/pump is controlled by a timer, a good method is to set it to run for two 2 to 4 hour cycles, 12 hours apart, each day.
Ozone generators can be retro fitted to 'ozone ready' hot tubs.
